Building Permits
When do I need a building permit?
Changes to properties and structures including both new construction and renovations or remodeling require permits under the Code of the Village of Nyack and any work which must conform to the NYS Uniform Code and/or Energy Code. This information offers specific guidelines and examples to help you determine whether you will need permits for planned electrical, plumbing, or structural work on your property
Where do I get a building permit?
At the Building Department, Village Hall, 9 North Broadway, Nyack NY 10960, Office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Why do I need a building permit?
Building permits and C.O.’s are your assurance and the village’s that your house and the buildings and stores you visit in the Village of Nyack meet the building codes for structural soundness and fire safety.
Dwelling Unit Safety
Where in dwelling units are carbon monoxide alarms required to be installed?
Carbon Monoxide alarms to be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms. Also, where a fuel-burning appliance is located within a bedroom or its attached bathroom, a carbon monoxide alarm shall be installed within the bedroom. 
Where in dwelling units are smoke alarms required to be installed?
Smoke alarms are required to be installed in the following areas: in each bedroom - outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms.  On each additional story of a dwelling (basements and habitable attic), not including crawl spaces and uninhabitable attics).  In dwellings or dwelling units with split levels and without an intervening door between the adjacent levels, a smoke alarm installed on the upper level shall suffice for the adjacent lower level provided that the lower level is less than on e full story below the upper level.  Smoke alarms shall be installed not less than 3 feet (914mm) horizontally from the door or opening of a bathroom that contains a bathtub or shower unless this would prevent placement of a smoke alarm required by Section R314.3.

Street Banners
Do I need a permit to display street banners?
Yes.  An application request for street banners can be found here.

Banner Content (as it will appear on banner):
Banners for display must be for civic, non-profit purposes; 
the date ofan event:;  no products or services for profit (including sponsor names or logos) will be accepted.; no political banners will be accepted.

Banners are installed by the Department of Public Works (DPW) at the discretion of the Village Administrator depending on weather conditions and other factors. If a banner must be removed due to weather or other safety factors and there is less than 4 days remaining on permit, banner will not be re-installed. The Village is not responsible for damage done to banner(s) while displayed.
Tree Removal
How much does a tree removal permit cost?
$50 per tree
What is a "Significant Tree"?
A Significant Tree is any tree that is 12 inches or greater in diameter at breast height. 
What is the process for tree removal?
No tree is to be removed until a tree removal permit has been issued!  One must first apply for a Tree Removal Permit where the Building Department will determine the application completeness. After that an application referral, review and staff report will take place.  Then public notices will be distributed and public hearings will be held regarding the tree removal.  Finally, decisions and findings will take place regarding the tree removal.  Once all of this is complete and satisfied,  then a tree removal permit will be issued.  If you have any additional questions please contact the Building Department directly.
